Placement for palaeography students

Context

This external academic internship is part of the Bachiller Project, which aims to create a database from the paleographic transcriptions of Repertorios of Hernando Colón. The project combines paleographic and computer challenges. Structured data enables in-depth analysis of the Library: its works, authors, organisation, acquisitions, and the relationships among them. The internship concerns only the Abecedarium B and provides the student with the opportunity to develop skills in digital and organisational techniques applied to palaeography.

Required profile

Palaeography
A mandatory requirement is appropriate training aligned with the characteristics of Abecedarium B, certified by a university professor. Participants are expected to commit to the paleographic transcription of a set number of pages, proportionate to the duration of the internship. All transcriptions must be encoded in accordance with the Bachiller Project instructions; the necessary training will be provided.
Computing
General knowledge, along with enthusiasm and a willingness to learn and apply new techniques.
Crowdsourcing
To identify, recruit and support contributors to the WikiBachiller. This requires the ability to persuade and motivate others to participate. The role also involves organising a paleographic transcription hackathon, with both in-person and remote participants, including logistical arrangements such as securing a venue.
Management
Ability to manage assigned tasks, work autonomously in a remote setting with flexible hours, provide regular progress reports, and carry out technical and organisational work within an academic, collaborative environment.
English
A sufficient level of English to communicate with potential international participants and to support the dissemination of the activity.

Duration and commitment

The external academic internship may begin at any time and will last five months; it may be paused and resumed if necessary. The total workload is 300 hours, equivalent to approximately three hours per day, five days a week, with a flexible schedule compatible with the student’s academic commitments.

Financial support

The student will receive a total gross grant of €2,000, paid in five monthly instalments of €400. This grant does not constitute a salary and does not, under any circumstances, imply the existence of an employment relationship. Responsibility for registering and deregistering the student with the Social Security system will lie with the university, in accordance with the regulations governing external academic internships. This arrangement does not imply the existence of an employment relationship.

Authorship and licensing of results

The student’s authorship will be acknowledged for all work completed. They will be expected to co-author a scientific article with one or more members of the project based on the practical experience. The results will be made publicly available under the CC BY-SA (Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike) licence.
