Academic Contribution to the Bachiller Project — Financially Supported

Context

This academic contribution is part of the Bachiller Project, which aims to create a database from the palaeographic transcriptions of Repertorios of Hernando Colón. The project combines palaeographic and computer challenges. Structured data enables in-depth analysis of the Library: its works, authors, organisation, acquisitions, and the relationships among them. The contribution concerns primarily the Abecedarium B and provides participants with an opportunity to develop and apply skills in digital, organisational, and palaeographic techniques.

Participation is open to suitably qualified individuals, including students, researchers, lecturers, and other academic or professional profiles whose background and interests are relevant to the project.

Required profile

Palaeography

A mandatory requirement is appropriate training aligned with the characteristics of Abecedarium B, certified or otherwise endorsed by a university professor or another suitably qualified academic. Participants are expected to commit to the palaeographic transcription of an agreed number of pages, proportionate to the duration and scope of their contribution. All transcriptions must be encoded in accordance with the Bachiller Project instructions; the necessary training will be provided.

Computing

General knowledge, along with enthusiasm and a willingness to learn and apply new techniques.

Crowdsourcing

To identify, recruit, and support contributors to the WikiBachiller. This requires the ability to persuade and motivate others to participate. The role may also involve organising a palaeographic transcription hackathon , with both in-person and remote participants, including logistical arrangements such as securing a venue.

Management

Ability to manage assigned tasks, work autonomously in a remote setting with flexible hours, provide regular progress reports, and carry out technical and organisational work within an academic, collaborative environment.

English

A sufficient level of English to communicate with potential international participants and to support the dissemination of the activity.

Duration and commitment

The academic contribution may begin at any time and is expected to last five months. It may be paused and resumed when necessary by mutual agreement. The total expected contribution is approximately 300 hours, corresponding to an indicative average of three hours per day, five days per week. The schedule is flexible and may be organised according to the participant's availability and other academic or professional commitments. The precise scope, timetable, and expected contribution will be agreed with each participant according to their profile and circumstances.

Financial Support

A research contribution of up to €2,000 gross may be paid to the Contributor, normally in five instalments of €400. No obligation to perform or deliver any work is created. At least €400 shall be payable. The Contributor is solely responsible for all applicable tax, social security, registration, reporting, and other legal obligations in any relevant jurisdiction. Nothing herein creates an employment relationship.

Authorship and licensing of results

The participant's authorship will be acknowledged for all work completed in accordance with applicable academic standards. Participants may be invited to co-author a scientific article with one or more members of the project based on their contribution and the resulting research, subject to the applicable authorship criteria. The results will be made publicly available under the CC BY-SA (Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike) licence.
